To beat the heat …

It’s been a while. Maybe someone will read this 🙂 I have only one thought today: It’s hot out there. Buy a shelter-less person something to eat and drink next time you’re in line somewhere. Consider it a random act of kindness. 🙂 Try it. You’ll feel good to do some good. And they’ll feel good at the most basic of physiologic levels.

Throwing Punches

My friend and I took a little drive yesterday.  A nice time, we accomplished some tasks, and all in all, it was a very ‘usual’ morning.

Until.  We were stopped at a red light, conveniently located next to an elementary school playground.  And my friend, a good natured, caring individual notices two small children absolutely beating the crap out of each other on the playground.  Where’s the teacher?  About 20 feet away from them, but clearly not paying attention (how lovely).  So she proceeds to start yelling in the car (windows up) to ‘get the kids, the kids are fighting!’ (and i joined her in this & eventually thought to put the windows down so we could be heard).  And the teacher (or adult) just stared at us (like we were nutty) as the kids proceeded to put each other in headlocks and take a couple swings.  And then the light turned green.  We had to go.  So what does my friend yell?  ‘You idiot!!’ … to a school yard full of small children.  Ahahaha!!!  Funniest.moment.ever.

My pup

my pup ran into a wall.

a brick wall.

and cut her chin … and possibly had a closed head injury (hello nursing skewl).

she’s o.k. 🙂 and i learned some things about a good friend, who goes to do things with you (like a side trip to the emergency vet at midnight) even at the wee hours, when there’s a final exam a few hours away.  who sits with you and makes jokes and helps to lighten the mood and who is there genuinely because they care.

and i learned how nice some people can be.  and it made the world a better place.

all because of my pup.  she’s a jewel.  (and a bullet who might just live forever).  🙂

Mia

Mia is my dog.  This is Mia:

I looked up her name tonight (remember the ‘what’s in a name?’) and the results are that my pup’s name is Hebrew in origin, a possible shortened form of ‘Maria.’  Mia means ‘who is like God’ – and – also ‘bitterness.’  And this last part is what cracks me up.  Indeed my pup can be bitter towards me!  For example, tonight I turned her loose in the courtyard, and she just kept running circles, as if to say ‘Look, lady, you keep me inside all day, I belong outside, and I’m going to keep on running!’  Then, I swear, she smiles at me.

In any event, she’s awesome.  My total sidekick.

Pelican

A pelican is a large water bird with a distinctive pouch under the beak, belonging to the bird family Pelecanidae. (I cut and pasted that from wiki)  🙂  There are 8 species of pelicans.  This little guy here lives in Florida.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for them to get all caught in the fishing nets off of the pier.  😦  But the fisherman usually can catch them and are able to cut them free.  This happened to my grandpa once, and I think I was scarred for life.  Funny little birds, yes?  Oh!  And according to wiki, there was a woman in Florida recently — and a pelican ‘rammed’ (again, quoted from wiki) into her face, requiring her to have 20 stitches.  They gather he mistook her face for a meal.  Wow.

Fighting Brain Tumors!

For When I Am Weak, Then I Am Strong (2 Corinthians 12:10)

Sometimes, when we suffer, believing we are going to come out on top or ahead is almost if not entirely impossible.  I had this thought tonight at clinical.  And then I thought of (though it may sound silly) these things:  Lance Armstrong and his winning battle against cancer, Beethoven composing and performing even after the virtual loss of his hearing, Team Hoyt (I’m smiling … google it if you don’t know the story), the list of thoughts I had goes on …

The mother of my very tiny patient gave me this bracelet tonight … Go Team Matthew, Cure Brain Cancer.

Brain tumors suck and cancer is evil  … but I’m on your team, buddy!!  xo

How much is that doggy in the window …

Remember that song?

I sometimes check my ‘dashboard stats’ and I believe, no one reads my blog.  😦  Not that there is much here to read … I’m no Shakespeare, no author of the Twilight novels, no Harry Potter talent either.  But it’s o.k. … maybe I write here because it takes my time, or just because I like to write, or because sometimes it feels like I’m having a conversation with someone (is that sad?)  🙂  So … tonight, I recommend to whoever may read this, a great book!

THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN it’s about a sweet, sweet dog, and it’s about life.  xoxo

The year of the … Monkey!

O.K., so it’s the Chinese New Year of the Tiger … but I just found out that Leonardo da Vinci was born in a year of the monkey, as was I.  And this makes me entirely happy.
